Pilates Perks- Studio S
Joseph Pilates felt passionate about creating an exercise artform to gain "complete coordination of body, mind and spirit." The same thing can be said about the energy and purpose at Studio S in Hyde Park. From studio owners who practice what they preach through their own incredible adventures, to the community they have created, to the wonderful instructors who carry out these principles for their clients, a passion for the practice guides everything about this fantastic studio.
Our Fit Day crew's bodies were treated to a Pilates mat class with the lovely Anna Wall post-lunch at the inviting studio after a long morning of tapping into their high energy levels. I was able to jump in Anna's class with the group, and I will tell you my body was tested in ways to which it was unaccustomed. As a trainer, I like to incorporate some Pilates moves into my workouts, but I rarely challenge my body to the full Pilates experience. I NEED to be in a classroom setting with a great instructor to get the full benefit in this department, and based on the feedback I received from the group afterwards, many of us are in the same boat.
The benefits that Pilates lovers tout range from a stronger core, increased flexibility, better posture, more energy, and, finally, a mind/body connection. The last is my favorite of the list, because I have to concentrate and bring my total concentration and effort to each action. My mind is forced to stay in the moment, a goal for myself on which I am particularly focused right now.
I have to say, I've been in classes before where I have NOT felt this connection, and the key ingredient has everything to do with a great instructor. Anna gives pitch-perfect cues (so you don't feel like you're fumbling through the workout or craning your neck at her every word) and gently demands that you give the class your total attention. The movements are precise, controlled and centered, and Anna gives gentle reminders to let your breath flow and to push past your comfort level at just the right amount.
I say this a lot, but I DO need more Pilates for my body. The beauty is that this form of exercise can benefit all body types at all levels of fitness.
